Bramble & Frame. Pre-owned luxury made accessible, authenticated and guaranteed.

You've bought a camera described as 'fully working' and found the shutter sticking at 1/500. You've paid for 'excellent glass' and found a fungal bloom the seller photographed around. That is the problem this business exists to fix.

We started Bramble & Frame in 2011 after a decade of buying and selling analog equipment through the collector circuit β€” and getting burned enough times to know exactly what an honest condition report should contain. The founding idea was simple: describe the piece the way you'd want it described to you.

Every camera that comes through us goes on the bench. Shutters are timed with a Metrolux II at all marked speeds. Meters are tested against a calibrated reference. Light seals are checked and replaced if there's any doubt β€” not if they've visibly failed, but if there's any doubt. The glass gets graded under a collimated light source: haze, cleaning marks, fungus, coating lift, separation β€” all noted, none omitted. The condition report is what you read before you buy, not what you discover when the roll comes back.

We're a small team. Four people, two benches, one rule: nothing ships until the report matches the piece.

Join a community of collectors who've trusted us since 2011 β€” men who shoot on grain, read specs before they bid, and expect the same honesty from a seller that they'd give a buyer.

We don't list cameras we haven't handled. We don't grade glass 'excellent' with caveats buried in the final line. And we don't sell a body as 'fully working' when what we mean is 'it fired when we pressed the shutter once.'

Every camera we list has been run through a roll. We write the condition report we'd want to read β€” including the scratches, the slow curtain, and the meter that drifts at dusk.

Before you buy

Questions we hear across the counter.

Film stocks, shutter accuracy, what a CLA actually covers β€” answered plainly, without the sales pitch.

01 How do I know the camera I'm buying is actually working?

Every camera we sell goes through a bench check before it's listed β€” shutter speeds tested across all marked speeds, meter verified where fitted, seals inspected for light leaks, film advance and rewind confirmed. The Nikon F3 HP gets its finder checked for prism rot. The Hasselblad 500C/M gets its dark slide, film back, and mirror damper looked at. If something is off, it goes in the condition report. We don't list cameras as 'sold as-is' unless we say so plainly.

02 What do your condition grades actually mean in plain terms?

We use Excellent, Very Fine, Fine, and Good. Excellent means a clean, fully functional example with cosmetics consistent with careful use β€” no brassing through to base metal, no fungus in the glass, no dents. Very Fine means light wear. Fine means honest user wear β€” marks, small scuffs, nothing that affects function. Good means it works but shows its age. Every listing names the grade and explains it in a short written note. The grade is what you get.

03 Do you sell film, and which stocks do you carry?

Yes. We stock Kodak T-Max 400 in 5-roll packs and Ilford HP5 Plus in 10-roll packs, along with a rotating selection of colour and specialty stocks. Film is stored refrigerated and dispatched cold-packed for longer journeys. If you're buying a camera and film together, we pack them in the same box and the shipping is one charge.

04 Can I return a camera if the condition report doesn't match what arrives?

Yes, within 14 days of receipt. If the piece doesn't match the written condition report β€” and by that I mean the grade, not a subjective preference β€” send it back and we cover the return postage. We ask you to photograph the discrepancy before repackaging. Refund goes out within three working days of the item arriving back here. We've had very few disputes because the condition notes are written to hold up, not to sell the camera.

05 How does shipping work, and what about customs for EU buyers?

We ship insured across the UK, EU, the EU, and Norway. Every parcel is declared at full value β€” we don't undervalue to save on duty, because that voids the insurance. EU buyers may face import VAT depending on their country's threshold; that sits with the buyer. Cameras are double-boxed and padded to a standard that makes couriers uncomfortable. Tracking is provided on every order. If a parcel is lost or arrives damaged, we handle the claim β€” you don't chase the courier yourself.

06 I want to sell my Leica M6 β€” how does that work?

Three steps. Email us photographs β€” exterior, glass, shutter curtain, base plate, and any box or papers you have. We review within 48 hours and come back with a written offer valid for five business days. If you accept, we send a pre-paid insured label. Once the camera arrives and bench-checks against your description, payment goes out within two working days. We also part-exchange if you're looking to move up or sideways. The Leica M6 Classic is something we know well and buy regularly.

07 Are the Olympus OM-1 bodies you sell metered correctly?

The OM-1 runs on a 1.35V mercury cell that's no longer made. We calibrate each one to run accurately on a modern 1.55V silver-oxide equivalent β€” either with a resistor-adjusted adapter or by checking the meter against a known reference and noting any exposure compensation needed. That detail is in every OM-1 listing. Depends on the individual body, so check the condition note rather than assuming.

08 Do you offer any kind of warranty on cameras you sell?

Mechanical cameras are complex and we're honest about that. Every camera we sell carries a 90-day functional warranty β€” if a fault develops that wasn't disclosed in the condition report, we repair or replace it. This covers shutter failure, meter failure, advance mechanism failure. It doesn't cover damage from mishandling, water ingress, or batteries left to corrode inside the body. If you're not sure whether something is covered, email us and we'll tell you straight.

"Ordered a Mamiya RB67 body listed in excellent condition. The condition report was honest β€” light wear to the focusing screen surround, exactly as noted. I ran two rolls of Kodak Portra through it the week it arrived. Not a single light leak, mirror damper intact, shutter speeds accurate across all settings. The authentication matched what I found when I opened the camera myself. That is not common with second-hand medium format."

"The Leica M6 I bought had a condition report that mentioned a small ding to the top plate at the rewind knob β€” easy to miss in photographs, but they flagged it. Rangefinder patch was bright and calibrated. Shutter curtains clean, no pinholes. I've bought four cameras here over three years. The condition reports hold up every time."

"Good experience overall. The Nikon F3 was as described β€” meter working correctly, viewfinder clear, body in very fine condition. Delivery took nine days, which was a little longer than I expected. Packaging was thorough β€” double-boxed with foam. The camera itself is exactly what I wanted. Would buy again."

"Bought a Hasselblad 500C/M with 80mm Planar. The condition report listed the film back as near-mint and the lens as very fine β€” one small cleaning mark noted on the rear element, described accurately. I checked it under loupe before shooting. The mark is there, and it has not affected a single frame. Honest grading. That is the whole job."

"The Olympus OM-1 itself was in good condition β€” meter needle responsive, shutter firing correctly at all speeds. My issue was with communication: I sent two emails asking about the meter calibration before purchase and got a reply only after the order was placed. The camera is fine and I'm happy with it, but faster responses would have made the decision easier."

"Third purchase from Bramble & Frame β€” a Contax G2 body this time. The condition report said excellent, and it was. Titanium finish clean, no brassing, viewfinder bright. I had a question about the autofocus calibration and the reply came back the same afternoon with a clear technical answer. That kind of knowledge is rare in a second-hand camera shop."
